If your Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwasher is not washing then you may need a new wash motor. The symptoms would be that it fills and pumps the water out but it just won’t move the water around to wash the dishes. Usually after starting the dishwasher it will do a 2 minute fill and then you will hear a humm for about 5 sec and then stop. The humm is the wash motor trying to start but then kicking off on overload. This dishwasher uses a seperate drain motor to drain the water out. That is why it will pump out and not washer.

To Replace the sump and motor you have to start by removing the wash arm assembly assembly and the rear feed cap from the top of the sump assembly. Remove the bottom front toe panel to access the drain hose.

Before removing the drain pump be sure dishwasher is drained of all the water. If being drained it will still contain water so be prepaired with a wet vac or towell to catch the water.

Remove the drain hose clamp and disconnect the drain hose from the drain pump assembly. On the drain pump there is a tab that has to be pressed and then the pump will turn counterclockwise and then can be remoced. The tab keeps the pump from turning so make sure its pressed before turning the pump.

Remove the optical water sensor by turning it counter clockwise.

There are 3 plastic retaining tabs for the sump that can pulled straight out.

Once the tabs are out you can push the sump and motor up into the tub. Open the door and remove the wire harness from the motor and remove the old sump and wash motor assembly.

Install the new wash motor and sump in the reverse order. Be sure to wipe the surface area on the tub where the sump seal sits(If stainless be very careful because its razor sharp). A very small amount of dish soap can lubricate the seal to seat better but don’t get any inside of dishwasher or it will suds up badly.

After completed, run dishwasher and watch for leaks.
